Exhaust manifold touches motor mount bracket

Hi Everyone,

I replaced my old exhaust manifold this weekend with one from the wreckers. Anyway the replacement manifold is touching the top of the motor mount bracket on the driver side of the engine. It is a 2.5 liter 88 yj.

Does that look right to anyone else? I highly doubt it was engineered like this. On the old manifold the fourth manifold tube at the back of the motor(closest to the firewall) was cracked all the way through. I suspect this clearance issue was why it was cracked in the first place. What do you all think?

there is only something like a 1/4" of clearance between the bottom of the manifold and the top of the bracket on both my '88 and '89 2.5L's.. but they don't touch

Your motor mount looks worn replace it and you should regain your clearance again

Tom, while I agree with you that the motor mount looks worn, replacing it won't change the clearance between the bracket and the manifold, as they are both solidly mounted to the engine block/head

I read op's post wrong and noticed he mount was worn.

IIRC jeep changed the manifold on the 2.5 in 1991. I am wondering if he got the manifold off a newer one.

I have needed to grind on a couple of manifolds to get them the clearance. Mostly the EGR block off plate area. I can not see the pic, but assume its near that area. Grind a little just to get a tiny gap. Since they are solidly mounted no need it huge gap.

also your motor mount looks broke like mine. right under were the bolt goes trough. that could cause the manifold to break as the down pipe might be hitting the drive shaft under acceleration.

I replaced the motor mount and like Cracked Cornish said it made no adjustment to raising the manifold off of the bracket. Will grinding the motor mount bracket affect the integrity of the bracket itself?

These are the best pictures I could take, but the heat shield on the bottom is rubbing on the bracket.

can't see your pic, but I would take the grinder to the heat shield before I did any grinding on the bracket

but these two parts don't move independent of each other, so if you have or can get a little more than a 1/8" between them it should be fine
