This is my first build, it might take a while. I am getting married at the end of September so my funds are limited. I bought the Jeep from a friend who drove it through college. After I bought it it sat at my dads house from 3 years since I moved 3 yours away and didnt have a garage. After buying a house I hauled it down and it sat it my garage for 2 years. I finally built a shop and have room to work on it.
The drive train was completely stock 4.2, ba10, np231. The 4.2 was using oil and down on power. I pulled the 4.2 out planing on swapping in a 4.0 with fuel injection. Once it was running I was going to pull it and make a 4.6 stroker.
I picked up a Cummins 3.3l 4 cylinder diesel at work a couple of years ago that needed rebuilt. It is rated at 65hp, 185lb-ft of torque I think. It is/was naturally asperated. From the factory the turbo charged version put out 85-105hp. I plan on putting on a turbo, intercooler and bigger injectors, it should put it around 110-120hp, 300-350 lb-ft of torque. Most guys are getting 25-30 mpgs with this set up.

Can't wait to see your progress. Make sure to take pics of the motor mounts you make for the cummins. I'm gonna do the same swap with a 3.9 next June when I have time. I've never seen a 3550 bolted to one before. Make sure your torque output isn't more than the tranny can handle.
The 3.3l is different than they 3.9l. the 3.9 is a 5.9 block minus 2 cylinders, the accessories and motor mounts from a 5.9 should work. These 3.3 are used in a off road equipment, skid loaders, wood chippers stuff like that. They come with a alternator and no other accessories. I want to run air conditioning and an a Izusu npr alternator with vaccum pump for the brakes and heater controls. I will post pics shortly.

I was never a fan of the square heads light, sorry. I looked into swapping the whole grill from a cj or tj but I didnt want to swap the hood and fenders also. So here is my solution, it still needs a

Looks pretty good! I'll take a diesel over a gasser any day - and not just because I can get a lot of waste Jet-A from work. I actually have plans to swap in a Nissan SD33T, most likely with a 3550 as well. The plan as of now is to run a hydroboost instead of vacuum boosted brakes. My goal is a Jeep that needs/has no electronics whatsoever to run. There aren't a whole lot of diesels that weigh in at close to a 4.2l, so heavier springs may be necessary. Plus they're often pretty tall, especially the ones with deep skirt blocks, so a suspension lift or some major sheet metal work on the oil pan may be necessary. Hopefully I won't have to doghouse the firewall.
My has the typical rot on the passengers side between the door and rear wheel. If yours doesnt have it consider yourself lucky. i replaced mine but it was a pain in the a@@. Here are some pics of it and my fuel filler swap also. I needed a bigger filler neck for the diesel so I robbed one off of a 1976 k20. With a litle straightening I think it will work.
I think I am going to try and find a tj plate holder.
First off try logging on using Google Chrome. It is a much faster engine and in this forum spell check is automatic.

If you hit water as long as you have a snorkel the diesel will motivate right through. The diesel also has
much more torque to move the Yj through anything, including big rocks. As I see it. In a diesel your battery
can float away and you can still move as long as you do not stall her. I love it!

Here are some shot of the mods I did to make the engine work for me. I wanted to keep the a/c compressor and power steering pump. I have read there is a a/c compressor mount made for these in some piece of equipment but I have never found pictures of it. Looking at some other builds people have used a alternator from an Isuzu npr that has a vaccum pump built into the back of it. The only downside is the alternator is rated for 70 amps only. I hope the vaccum pump has enough to run my brakes. I also wanted to keep the serpentine belt set up.
I took a water pump pulley from a 5.9 and cut the hub out of it.
Turned down the crankshaft pulley so it would slide over it.
I needed some place to bolt on some idlers and a belt tensioner. Here is my first attempt. The front gear cover already had threaded boss I bolted it to.
The alternator used to mount on this bracket. I flipped it over and welded a piece on to it the ran a bolt through it to mount my a/c compressor.
On the top I made a brace for it.
I bolted the alternator to the bottom of the a/c compressor and I will bolt it to the plate I made for the front of the engine.
For the power steering pump I removed the fuel filter and made a plate to bolt on the power steering pump I had from a 98 cherokee. Attachment 449864 Attachment 449867 Attachment 449868
I need another idler pulley and a belt tensioner but here is how it is going to go.
Hopefully I got my measurement close and the belt will stay on.
