The reason for the bars....

The reason the YJ have the track and sway bars, is because Jeep got a bad rap back in the CJ years because of Roll over, People were using these as cars and they are Utility Vehicles.. So to Improve safety to those people and and the groups pushing safety issues(you see it everyday) Jeep made those changes.... along with wider frames and longer wheelbases.. Yes you can run your jeep safely with out them but remember what you are driving. Think of this, your driving 60 mph down the highway you reach down to change the radio channel, your right front wheels drops off the asphalt, one quick jerk to correct it and you could roll much easier than with the bars....................

Alright, I got another question for you guys.

What about removing the steering stabilizer?
I've heard of some guys doing that too.
What is the stabilizer's actual function in the steering?
I've reached a crossroads where I either need to replace the stabilizer or just take the old one off.
THoughts?

it dampens the steering so that you don't feel every bump in the road.
also it hides problems with steering alignment.

I also heard you need a steering stabilizer if you tow bar the vehicle. Without it it want's to wander and not cooperate on turns.
Just what somebody told me. Not positive it's correct, but it make's sense. I tow bar my Heep, and it tracks perfectly.

Just wanted to toss a quick thank you for this thread. Ripped out my front sway and trackbar today and really enjoy the way it rides now. It makes it take bumps like a lincoln, stays better balanced going over obstacles and looks much meaner when flexed.

The rear trackbar will be disappearing once I have an evening free this week. Thanks again.

Glad I found this thread. You guys have helped me decide to remove mine during my upcoming lift install. Guess I'll have to get a trash can in honor of Joe.

Thanks also to Rusty for putting all of this together.

I changed my exhaust yesterday and had no choice but to remove the rear track bar because it was interfering with the exhaust. After reading this post I decided to remove the front track bar today. I took off the sway bar last year. I took these off with hopes of locating my front end rattle. I just took it for a test spin and got on the highway. My Jeep feels like the sloppiest pig on the highway, for all of you people saying the ride is smoother your wrong. All it does sway around which fools you into thinking its smoother. On the side streets at low speeds it was decent, but still has a boat like feel. I think most people on these forums just follow what the majority of people say just to either fit in or not want to get bashed for disagreeing. My opinion on this is if you drive your jeep daily and do a lot of city/highway driving then leave them on. In an emergency situation you're going to regret it. Jeeps are bad enough as it is why make it worse. If you live in the country and go off roading all the time or live in a low traffic area then rip them out and dress them up in cute clothing and take photos of them. Now that I have mine out I will replace the bushings and put them back in. For all the people saying the CJ didn't have them and blah blah CJ..The YJ blows the doors off the CJ in everyday driving. The only thing the CJ has on the YJ is that pretty grill and dash. I vote NO to removing track bars. Safety is #1 in my book

Im going to bet you have a old worn out stock springs and probably the oem shocks, and thats why it feels so sloppy and dangerous............ If you replace your springs with a lift suspension they will be stiffer so will aftermarket shocks, thats why the guys above you say it works..... I have not disconnected mine as of yet but i will just to check out this theory. So i agree with you if the first line is true.

Dmax, My springs are old, probably the original. My shocks are about a year old ranchos, My front end is a bit worn but the difference from taking off the front bar was big.

Removal and articulation

I was told that by removing my sway bar and track bar for articulation that I would be increasing my risk of a failure while articulating. Currently running stock axles and gears with 3in lift on 31's. Is there any truth to this? I'm not planning on doing some crazy articulation, but definatly looking for more than I have now. Also if I remove the swar bar links and like it without them I can go ahead and just remove the entire sway bar and add it to my blue trash can, correct?
