Engine will not start

I just finished rebuilding my 258. I installed everything correctly(to the best of my knowledge), based on the pictures I took as I took the engine apart. I go to start it and it doesn't start, but it does crank. It sounds almost like the battery was dead, so I replaced it and I still get the same thing over and over again. Until late this afternoon I go to try and the muffler explodes!!! Don't know how this happens but I need help I have no clue why it wont start.

Already replaced the spark plugs, old distributor cap and wires though.

Any Ideas??

Spark...pull a wire and check with plug

Fuel...fuel making it into the carb?

Well I just had a similar problem with my 4 banger, it cranked correctly but didn't start and I also had a loud "ploc!" noise, almost like an explosion, turned out to be that I had the spark plug cables in the incorrect order, did you already check that on yours?

Dumping raw fuel into the exhaust it collected in the muffler and then a good spark is all it takes. You appently have good fuel so you need to check for spark and your timing.

Check that you are for sure at top dead center on the compression stroke with the distributor rotor pointing to the #1 cylinder. Make sure you don't have the distributor 180 degrees off. I just got done with my 258 and spent 3 frustrating days until it hit me like a ton of bricks that I was 180 off.
replace your cap, rotor, wires, plugs and coil if you can that way you can rule out any issues with them if you arent getting the timing right.

It would be alot easier for one to determine what the issue could be if you gave more information on exactly what you did to rebuild the motor.

srdart67: I replaced all of the gaskets and replaced one of the pistons.

Thanks for all the advice! It ended up being the timing was off. But was wondering if I have to weld the new muffler on or could I just simply clamp it it into place (I don't know how to weld trying to do it all myself).

Yes you can clamp a muffler.
