Engine stops randomly when at cruising speed

Usually once or twice a day, I will be driving with the motor going somewhere between 2k-3k RPM when it will just stop pushing. This almost always occurs when I am maintaining speed not accelerating, it will continue to run but I won't be able to accelerate, and it gradual slows down until it stops.
I am sometimes lucky and it will just kick back in part way through the slowing down.
It seems although it could just be coincidence that if I stomp the gas a bunch of times it is more likely to keep going.
I'm wondering if this is fuel delivery related, as it doesn't like to start unless I prime the pump a few times by turning the key off and on, and keep the gas pedal down partway.
any suggestions?

Does the engine completely shut off? Does it come back on a little while after? Might be Crank Position sensor.......not sure about it on the YJ's, but its a somewhat common occurance with the TJ's. The wires to my CPS were tucked under the exhaust manifold getting burnt up and shorted out, the engine would shut off out of nowhere. Check some wires around the engine. Good luck

yes it does sound to me like it is an electrical problem as well. If I remember correctly, heat will increase resistance and that seems to be what you are describing. Start with the CPS and if that is okay, when it dies, you want to make sure you are getting electricity to the the coil.

Thats why its odd, it still runs, just doesn't accelerate, and gradually runs down before stopping, and once the engine is really hot its usually fine.
I don't have any vacuum lines that do anything as far as I know, other then MAP sensor.
Its a 2.5 TBI engine.
Also, that wouldn't explain the delay for starting, I can either crank it until the battery almost dies or I can prime it a few times and it fires right up, both problems started around the same time.
also, it happens less frequently if I run a fuel additive.
Is the tank in an 88 yj pressurized?
on a side note the heat shield around my exhaust manifold is gone, so the intake gets pretty hot as well, is there any material I could use to make up a shield for the intake and the CPS?
How do I check the CPS?
