Engine Serial Number

I would like to decipher an engine serial number. If anyone knows how I can do this to figure out what engine exactly this was that would be great. I figured out the CASTING number near the coil behind the distributor 53008403 is from 1991/95 era jeep, but there is a 7 digit serial number stamped into a machined surface in the side of the block under the a/c mount bracket. Any ideas to help me narrow this down a little more from that number to find the exact year this is? And for what jeep? etc. Is this possible from the stamped serial number?

The stamped number isn't a serial number, it is a build date code.

It translates to the year and day of production and the engine type

The digits of the code identify:

1. 1st digit - the year (e.g., 4 = 1994)
2. 2nd and 3rd digits - the month (01-12)
3. 4th and 5th digits - the engine type/fuel system/compression ratio
(MX = a 4.0L 8.7:1 compression ratio engine with multi-point fuel
injection system).
4. 6th and 7th digits - the day of the month of engine build (01-31).

here are the numbers: 609hx20. What year engine is this? I am going bonkers trying to dissect all of these digits and google is not helping me. This is an assembly line engine and has never been installed in a jeep. It's new old stock basically. Can anyone break down the entire code and all its specifications?

The HX is coming up as this: HX = a 2.5 liter = [150 CID] 9.1:1 compression ration engine with a multi port fuel injection system.

It is a 4 banger, right?

So not too certain I'm going to be real helpful here, but didn't the MPI not come out in the 4 banger until 2000? It was CFI prior. I don't know what the code was for YJ era 4 bangers, so is it possible this is from an engine manufactured in 2006 and not 1996? But Jeep went to a 2.4L 4 cyl in 2003, right? Maybe a few Jeepers from the 2.5 club who know their engines to be original from the YJ era and tell us if it says HX or something else?

I'll keep looking.

Yes, a brand new 2.5 engine, not rebuilt, but brand new off the assembly line.

According to my Jeep factory service manual (wife found it at a garage sale. I think she paid two bucks!) There can also be letters stamped near the distributor indicating non standard bore sizes up to 0.10 and non standard sized bearing journals.
