engine rebuild or swap?

So as stated in my previous post today, I have finally disassebled my 90" YJ and am ready to start spending some cash on the rebuild.

I have the AMC 258 I6 with 135K miles on it. My question is...Should I spend the money to rebuild it and add the fuel injection kit, or should I take that money and swap a different engine in it?

If the swap is the way to go (which is how I am leaning), then what would you all recommend? Also what tranny to go with that?

FYI: I am planning on the Ford 8.8 rear (unsure on the front axle), 4.5" RE SUA lift, 1" or 2" body lift, and 35 X 12.5" tires.

I swapped an 05 4.0 into my 87 YJ. Dumped the BA10 and swapped inan AX15 and a newer NP231. You'll need some odds and ends but the parts can be located with a little digging.

I have a write up on www.itsajeep.org if you care to read it. Might shed some light. Just do a search in the forums for username jwicker. It was back in Jan/Feb 06.

I'd definitely opt to swap for the multi port injected 4.0 !

The Mopar MPFI kit cost me $2000. You can probably swap to the 4.0 for way less. Get a used 4.0 and stroke it with your 4.2L crank. (Look into stroker motors). You should already have the AX15 tranny, I did with my 1990. I think the money for the MPFI kit was too high for the gain I got.

You can easily get a junk 4.0 motor. WOuldn't cost a whole lot to get it machined and then all you need is the kit/parts from the link above.

I love my stroker!

If you look into local rebuild shops, they can likely professionally rebuild your I6 for $2,200 to $2,500 to your specifications - also add $2,000 for the FI kit and install. The Joy of the I6 is that it's got a 3 bearing journal which makes it very reliable and limits vibration unlike V8's or I4's

My thought is that if you remanfacture the devil you know, you're much more likely to keep the synergy you may already have in all your pieces and parts together!

The I6 is a great engine and one that you should not discard too readily

So I guess the way to go is to get a 4.0L and have it machined and add the stroker kit. I have the AX15 tranny, but want to go automatic. What tranny would be a good one for that setup?

I live in Maryland and the laws require a engine to be atleast 1990 or newer. So with that said, if I wanted to go with a 350 what would be the correct engine to look for? LS1?

Thanks for all of the input.

What shop where you robbed at? I only paid $800. You only have to pay 2k if you let them pull your motor and replace it. I pulled my own dropped it off and picked up a week later.

Pushead - that's what I was quoted for the entire removal, remachine, reseal, grind, polish and paint the long block back to and above factory specs. These are guys in my area that I trust. That's what Machine Shop works goes for around the Seattle Area that I'm aware of.

That is like I said if you let them pull and replace the motor. Ask them what it cost just to rebuild the shortblock. It will probably be around $800.

Do a 4.0L swap. I got a 4.0L with 90K miles on it, flywheel, and wiring harness on ebay for $250.00

You can also reuse your existing AX-15 transmission. Just make sure you get the flywheel from the donor.

Thanks

Thanks for all of the great suggestions. I think that I will look for a used 4.0L and have it rebuilt with the stroker kit.
