engine install advice needed...

I'm in the middle of an engine swap in the YJ, and I need some guidance from someone that's installed one of these engines.
I found out the tranny mount is broken and needs to be welded, so right now the tranny/t-case is just laying on the skidplate. Here are my choices...
1. I can weld the mount back together in the Jeep, then try to install the engine by itself and "stab" the tranny into the clutch splines.
2. I can remove the tranny/t-case and weld the mount while out of the Jeep, then install the tranny on the engine and reinstall the entire combination into the Jeep all at once. This would involve removing the grill, but that looks pretty easy.
What say the experts?

Put the trans in etc laying on the skid plate. Then just put a jackstand under the tailcone and drop the skidplate out. Weld it up and re-install.

That's a way I hadn't considered...
Any tips on getting the tranny stabbed into the clutch splines without the tranny being "anchored"?
