engine clicking and wont start

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on why the engine in our jeep wont start. When you turn the key there is just a loud clicking noise that comes from somewhere under the hood(I cant pinpoint the sound b/c no one is around to turn the key while i investigate)

I also recently replaced the starter and it has a new battery.

thanks guys,
Matt

Since you have already replaced your battery and starter, start checking all your grounds, especially the ground strap from the block to the firewall, and look for corrosion. Also, try to jump start using another battery to see if you by chance have a dead cell.

I had this happen at Advance Auto. The Jeep guy in the store couldn't figure it out. When my dad got there, he wiggled the starter cable (the one from the battery to the starter I think), and it was loose. he tightened it up (be careful not to touch it against anything!), and she started right up. Check all the bolts on the starter solenoid. Hope this helps.

well i checked the grounds and all cables from the battery and they were fine. my dad got home so we push started it and it started and ran just fine!?!? Could my starter be bad again? the one i put in there i got from napa and installed it in january.

edit: when i turn the key there is just 1 click and i am pretty sure it is coming from the starter

Did you just look at the grounds or did you actually remove the grounds and clean with a wire brush?

I've learned the hard way that just because it LOOKS fine doesn't mean there is a good connection.

The starter is easy to get to; pull it and have it bench tested.

Battery cables could need replacing, too.

Just this past week (the same time, of course) I had a dead battery, bad ground, and a starter that crapped out on me.

Hey I JUST had that happen to me last thursday. Sounds like your starter is bad. My old starter went bad so I replaced it about three weeks ago and the new one was great. Then a few days ago it did that same 'click'.I could turn the key 50 times and it would finally roll over. In that small amount of time it had went bad. I was pissed. But had a lifetime warranty on them at autozone and replaced it in their parkin lot for free. The bad part was that it was during a big a$$ rain storm . But yeah I'm 99% sure the starter is bad. or the solenoid. when I replace it I just replace the whole thing even the solenoid.

Autozone gave me a bad "rebuilt" starter one time to on their lifetime warranty.

well i got it from napa and i am pretty sure i no longer have the receipt so i will probably have to shell out the money again.... as for the grounds i did pull them and clean them, but if it was a bad electrical circut somewhere then shouldnt the jeep not have ran when we push started it?

I'm not sure about the deal with an electrical short haha, but when I went to auto zone to exchange starters, I didn't even need a receipt. They had my warranty on the computer. And I think they can scan the barcode on the starter if it has one. Parts from autozone may break and mess up, but I dont mind replacing them for free. It just means more practice working on my jeep

Have you tried jumping to another vehicle or checking the battery voltage with a multimeter? Why did you replace the battery? Maybe your alternator is not recharging the battery. You should have about 12.5-13V at the battery when the engine isn't running and 14 + when it is. Shouldn't drop below 9-10 volts when cranking.

It's the starter relay, located on the passenger side firewall on the '87. They stick and will just "click" but not actually make the switch letting power to the starter. It's like $12 at Advanced

^^^ X2!!! Bypass it by running a jumper wire from your battery directly to the starter solenoid to check if it truly is this. Your starter should still engage if it is the relay, you can do it with the key in any position but make sure it's in neutral with the brake on if the key is in the run position! Good luck.
