EMP proof

There was reciently a news flash about EMP - Electomagnetic pulse which can disable electronic equipment. This got me to thinking and leads me to this question:

What was the last year Jeep made a model that did not have electronic or computer assisted components?

thanks

Don't know for sure, but it's definately before 1985. I would guess that the last production CJ's were still "old school" I believe all YJ's are computer controlled and I think they came out in '85

Yup all YJs have computers. Most CJs have computers too. Its got to be mad old...

I would not be worried. Because if you go down most everyone around you will too and your cell phone and stuff...

When I was researching this, I found that it was the early 1980's that Jeeps started using computers. The Jeep dealer also told us this. I think I even found a website that said it was 1982, but I can't swear to that.

Stock extra parts in a faraday cage like the ignition, distributor, alternator, etc.

My 1982 CJ-8 did not have a computer. It had a carb and electronic ignition. No it wasnt modified I bought it brand new off the showroom floor.

diesel engine is the easiest to make EMP proof... Dont need spark or computer and no distributor.
Battery and starter and fuel and that sucker will run,...

I have also heard that diesel is better. But, we have a gasoline engine so what spare parts should we stash away?

some scientists believe that a vehicle made of steel and sitting on tires acts as a faraday cage so they will operate ,others claim batteries, diodes, coils, etc. will also be bad so possibly something old and diesel powered will work, like a antique farm tractor that will be able to drive around the disabled vehicles.

Do everything with a positive attitude, it won't always work but you'll piss enough people off to make it worthwhile.

the voices aren't real but they sure have good ideas.

My job is electromagnetics. If it has wires to it at all it is just a mater of frequecy and power level. The only way to make it emp proof is to run a diesel but keep in mind you still have a battery, alternator, and starter. If you are talking about the power from a conventional (RF)transmittter you can run a shielded ignition system like the egyptian military yj jeeps used. It will cover 99% of what can be thrown out by a transmitter. If you are talking about an EMP pulse from a nuke or something like the solar flare dooms day event....nothing you do will help it to keep running during the event. The Magnetic field will creat an impulse that cannot be shielded for. Stoping a RF signal is relatively easy, stopping a magnetic impulse is next to impossible. The only way to protect the electreonics from the mgnetic field is to shut it off during the event and restart after. The military did a bunch of test with nukes in the 50's and the conclusion was exactly that. It found that vehicles that were off during the event were driveable after the event or required minimal repair to get running.
