Electrical - Ignition problem...1993 won't turn over
I have posted a few things already but have yet to receive a response. So I am posting again.
I was driving and my engine light came on and then the Jeep just died. I tried to crank it over and it wouldn't start...it seem like it wanted to but would not turn over. I changed the fuel pump, the CPS, and the ignition pickup and still having the same problem. When I turn the key, I can hear the fuel pump kick on, and a friend with a light tester said when I turn the key I get power to the coil, but wuithin a second it is lost. I can change a lot of things but when it comes to electrical I am out of league. What is the next course of action I should take to find out what is the problem? Should I change the coil...and the ignition switch? Or could it be something else? I got a price on he Control module...mad expensive, so I am praying that is not it...I checked the ground by the parking brake and that is secured. I am not sure what else to check for/ Like I said, the car wants to start, everything seems to be engaging, I get the radio, lights, I checked the key codes already, the pump kicks on, but it still won't turn over. Thanks so much ~ Kim

I have had past issues with the same symptoms. Sorry to say it was the control module that was my problem.

You checked the fuel pump ground on the sidewall of jeep by the parking brake correct. Not on the parking brake itself (thats the EBRAKE light on your cluster to let you know its engaged)

I checked for the codes...one was for A/c which I don't have and the other was for EGR. I did check the fuel pump ground where you said and it all checks out.

how do you know when the ECM is shot? Should I try something else before I purchase that? I just checked into that and its not easy to return, since they program it according to your VIN # and model, etc. Any suggestions on what I should do BEFORE I go and get the ECM? I am doing this on my own right now, so any further help or info would be great! thanks guys!

You could pull the ECM and take the cover off and look at the board and tell if you have any fried lead-connections-wires(whatever there called there the silver lines on the board that goes to the diodes(black barrel looking things)) I cant fix it but many electrical folks can if it is FRIED.

did you check for spark at the plugs yet? depending on whether the plugs are actually firing could take this a few different ways.

My YJ did the same thing, it turned out to be the ecu causing the problem. I was constantly replacing sensors, but the only thing that fixed my stalling issue was a remanufactured ecu.

What codes are stored (what numbers showed up)? Your rig does not have an EGR system.

yeah I figured out that I do not have EGR and the only codes that came up were for the EGR and the A/c both of which I do not have. I have replaced everything pretty much. I even went and got a new coil and tested it but it still did not turn over, so it is not that...so I am returning it.
I wasn't getting a spark to the plugs before, which is why I replaced the ignition pickup, a little nervous to check that now...being I am by myself...and have never done that...haha! So if there is no spark should I change the plugs and the wires first? I know that they are only two years old, so I really didn't think that was the problem, but now I am beginning to wonder. I took out the washer reservoir and I can see how to remove the ECU but a little nervouse about doing it as I have noticed there are wires attached to it behind a small rectagular box on the bottom right hand corner...can anyone give me a clue how to remove the box so I can check to see what it loks like inside? I also bought an inginiton switch, buuuut I hear that is a nasty job and if it is not that and i tis the ECU I realllly do not want to spend time l;earning how to replace it...any thoughts on that guys? And btw, thanks for all the help ![]() Kim ~
