electrical 4wd switch/wiring write up
Ok so there have been a lot of questions on this recently so this is how I did my switch install. this is to be able to use your 4wd light with a solid passenger side shaft.
First of all I bought a 4wd switch from quadratec part no. 52247 01 Then I went to my auto parts store to find a nice connector to plug into the switch. ended up finding this PT186 it was a part number for a gm truck harness. It needed to be slightly modified to work correctly with the switch i'm sure there are other ways to do this like at the jeep dealer.... but not a big fan of the local one here. After that just unscrew the old vacuum one and screw in the electrical one. I haven't wired it into the old part of the harness yet but it's pretty self explanatory. this is the whole assembly scrwed in

My switch came in last week, but I didn't have the plug yet. Hopefully the local parts store has the plug. What did you use to cut the plug?

not the cleanest thing but a die grinder the cut is pretty crude but you can use just about anything to make the cut or go to local jeep dealer they may have the factory tj, xj or the like plug that'll work

so i got it wired today and i'm guessing my 4wd bulb is blown because the light isn't coming on I haven't driven it in 4wd in quite some time with the light hooked up so... I'm hoping that's it because it should just complete the circuit by contacting that switch unless I'm missing something??

I'm not sure if it has a fuse for the light but I would check that first. By just looking at it, I am guessing that since it is a 2 wire hook up, one is 12V and the other is ground.
I went to the local autozone, and they were no help at all. The stuff out on the floor was for a square pin. I asked the guys behind the counter and they had no clue. A bunch of young kids. I'll try the advance auto next, they usually are a little more helpful. |

ah yeah mine was a local family owned type store they have a bunch of weird things but they order a lot through parts plus if that helps. I assumed that one is a 12V and a ground so i figured by hooking them together should turn the light on immediately and no so much luck so I'm going to check for a fuse, blown bulb, then trace the wires.

I did a little research and the part you got is Mixture Control Solenoid Connector from a carburated 81-90 Chevy. If anyone needs to walk into a parts store and get this part, tell them to look up:
1980 Chevy Caprice, w/ 3.8L V6. |

I haven't got around to hooking all this up. I am headed to a junk yard tomorrow to try and get the stock wiring plug and some other stuff. If they don't have one I am going to get the same plug and try it out.
Glad to hear it all works. Sometime the simplest things can fix the problem. |

I finally got around to finishing up making the 4wd light work again. I used the same 4wd light switch above, but I picked up a plug from the junkyard off of a 96 4wd XJ. I just cut the plug off of the donor XJ with about 6" of wire. I used the stock YJ wire that used to run down to the original switch on the front axle, but added about 2' of wire and the plug from the XJ. I took my time to solder all the wire since it had plugs on both ends and I could do it on the bench. I used heat shrink tube and tape to keep it water proof. I then put my new wire inside some plastic loom, installed the switch and zipped tied everything up out of the way. It works just like it should, no light in 2wd, LIGHT in 4wd HI, no light in neutral, LIGHT in 4wd LOW.

The older YJ's had a clock in that slot of the dash, but nothing lights up in the bottom part of that slot. I'm not sure what the Jeep engineers were thinking.

Would have been nice if there was a clock under there. In the older models if the cppco was where the 4wd is now, where was the 4wd?
