electric cooling fan conversion
I have been going through a bunch of cooling fan clutches and was wondering how easy it would be to put in a electric fan...
somebody has to have done this before. Is there any instuctions for it anywhere?

I just bought a 16" fan and termostat/wiring kit from www.jegs.com . I removed my old fan, clutch, and shroud and installed the new fan and wiring according to the instructions that came with it. Pretty easy overall.

Thanks

I love it. It moves enough air such that when it's on I can feel the air being pulled in through the grill from the outside, and thats with the radiator and AC condenser in between. I wired up an extra switch for it inside the Jeep so I can turn it off manually if I wanted to (I dont know, maybe if I was going to ford a lake or something!)... As a test I shut it off once and sat there idleing watching the temp gauge slowly climb. I turned the fan back on and literally watched the temp gauge fall back down. It was at normal operating temp in a minute maybe. Even slow off-roading in the dead of summer, the temp. gauge has never moved from that dash under 210 so far, so I think it works quite well!
For mounting it same with these nylon strap type things that go through your radiator and work kinda like a zip tie to secure the fan to the radiator. These were a pain for me because I have an AC condenser in front of my radiator, so I had to unbolt the radiator from the grill to reach the front of it to connect the other side of the straps. We installed one on my friends non-AC YJ though and mounting literally took 2 minutes since I could just reach in through the grill.

Did you get a pusher or puller fan? I've been considering this conversion myself.

I mounted my fan on the engine side of the radiator so it's set up as a puller. The one I got is reversable though so I sould have used it as a pusher on the grill side of the radiator if I wanted to.
It's a 2000cfm fan. I think this is the one I got:

i put two fans on my yj. 16" puller set up with a t-stat and a switch for fording and a 12" pusher with switch only for the hell of it ( 12" fan was free from a friend ). i live in SOUTH georgia ( 20 Mi north of tallahassee fl ) and have no problems with overheating, even pulling a trailer. oh....by the way, with the extra HP from no mechanical fan, you'll be able to pull the trailer.

I'm pleased as well. I have the 2.5 and the fan clutch had frozen up...and after taking it off, and seeing how heavy it was, I replaced it with an electric for only a few dollars more. I used the B-Cool pancake model for the 4.0, primarily because it was marked down for clearance. Even though it's not a high-performance fan, it's more than adequete for the job.
This started as an experiment. I don't have a fan thermostat yet; I use a dashboard switch. Thing of it is, I only find I need to turn it on when stopped for LONG periods in traffic. Even 20mph seems enough to keep it cool when on level streets.
It cools off quickly when stopped as well. Without the shroud and all that hardware, air comes up quite nicely by convection into the engine bay and out through the unimpeded radiator.
This should have been done at the factory. This year's TJs in fact do come equipped like that...

Look like it a pretty decent mod, compare if you go with flex a lite kit that cost almost $250 but with all the nice bracket...
I just ordered my self one of that electric fan from www.jegs.com .
Can't wait to take my fan clutch and free up some hp.
thanks again

I used the Taurus fan. A paper was 3' from the radiator and it disappeared, when I pulled it from the fins it was imprinted. I used a heavy duty amplifier breaker instead of a fuse, re-set instead of replace a very expensive heavy duty fuse.
LOTS of room...

Yeah, I didn't metion it but I noticed the exact same thing with mine. I used to turn it off for the highway because I knew it wouldn't need it with the amount of air hitting it, but then I noticed that the gauge wouldn't creep up unless I was doing stop and go in the city. Even doing 30 around town doesn't make the needle move.

The only problem I have had with my Electric fan setup is the T-Stat. It is a 180 degree stat but it does not kick on until my dash guage says 200 and then the fan cools it down so quickly that it shuts off and continues to do this cycle. I am thinking about replacing the t-stat with a relay wired into the ignition and just adding a shut-off override for cold morings to heat up quicker and for water crossing.

Might want to try another auto parts store... I know the Advance near me has them.
Or try places like www.summitracing.com or www.jegs.com .
