E-brake adjust

O.K., I did a search but the only info I could find was on a TJ. My e-brake won't hold the heep on anything but level and so I'm thinking I need to replace or adjust it but the instructions I found for the TJ detail taking the rear drum apart and checking a bunch of stuff. Do I really have to do that or can I just tighten the cable some? I've never performed this, do I need special tools or just the usual?

Thanks for the help

You just need to tighten the cable. The adjustment is on the driver's side just forward of the rear wheel...sort of under the driver's door. You will see a square metal plate with a nut/bolt you can tighten to tension the cable.

The best picture I could find is this: http://www.commtechreview.net/jeep/images/tuffycsc8.jpg

It is the same adjustment plate I was referring to but it is obviously on a different Jeep, not a YJ. But you'll get the idea.

Just to add to that. You should make sure that the star wheel adjustment inside the drum is correct first. Then adjust the e-brake.

O.K. That'll probably be something I'll just dig into and see if I can figure it out. I'll be doing a lot of different work on it tomorrow, clutch master replacement, oil change, etc. I'll pull the rear wheel and look at the brakes. This jeep is missing a wheel stud on one of the axles and another is stripped. Those are pretty easy to replace aren't they?

E-brake recall

ok here it is. Jeep/Chrysler is doing a emergency brake recall on alot of jeeps. mine did the same thing that you described on your jeep. if you take your jeep to the dealer they will do a vin number search to tell you if your vehicle is a candidate for the repair...no charge for you

recall info here

Just bang out the stud and put in a new one. Pull it into place with a lug nut but make sure to use a few oversize washers so you don't bottom out the nut on the bolt flange. Otherwise it wil not seat all the way. It will make sense when you see it.

brake shoes are cheap. good time to renew everything.

YEAH!! The PO of my jeep didn't do the recall so I can get it fixed. Now I just have to make sure the stealership doesn't rip me off. It also says I need to have the fuel pump gasket replaced, what's that about?

Stealership CANNOT RIP YOU OFF. They have to do the work BY FEDERAL LAW!!!!!! Even if you were the 500th owner. Call ahead though and make shure they have the parts and make an apptment.
