Dynomax Super Turbo to Loud?

Hey everyone, I could use a little help from people who have a Dynomax Super Turbo installed on their YJ's. I own a '93 2.5 L and I had a Catco catalytic converter installed at the same time.

I picked the Dynomax version based on price and on advice from a friend and after reading many threads in this forum. My first concern was that I did not want something that was loud but I wanted some extra performance.

Well I went ahead and had everything installed yesterday for $150 at a local shop and I can say that it is DEFINITELY loud. Hurt my ears loud. Turn heads loud.

I figure only one of 3 things:

1. - The install has leaks (would this cause the the extra noise?) - it was not welded in.

2. - The muffler and parts simply need to be run enough to settle down into a normal operation (don't even have a clue if this is a truism or not. I did experience a white smoke coming out of the exhaust that I was told was simply the burning off of a protective coating)

3. - This is simply what it sounds like and I have over estimated how "not that loud" is a very relative term.

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated as I'm about at the point only after one day that I want to rip it out and just go OEM to my extreme displeasure.

I've got the Dynomax on mine and it's not unbearably loud as you say yours is. Mine only has that nice ear clogging loudness right before you shift gears, and thats only when I have the top up. I've got a small leak right around where the pipe connects to the header and its not loud enough to bother me. If you are concerned about it leaking, take it back and ask them to look it over and make sure all the bolts are still tight. If they say they would have to charge you to look it over, dont ever go back there again to have exhaust work done. I've never heard of breaking in a standard muffler either, a glass pack maybe, but not a muffler. Later <><

UPDATE:

I talked to Dynomax and they indicated that high flo after market Cats (which they indicate the Catco cat is) can cause excessive noise. They offered two suggestions.

1. - Purchase the 20" muffler version to help suppress the noise. The person did not know if that would fit in the Jeep or not

- or -

2. - Exchange it for the Walker Quiet Flow muffler. Any one use this?

She also metioned a resonator but for some reason it seemed as if that was not an option for me, can't remember why.

Right now I am going through hoops try to get someone to authorize my return with Summitracing as they are refusing to take it back since it is already installed even though Dynomax (Walker) said they would issue an exchange.

Hopefully someone can benefit from this experience.

Also, when I talked to Dynomax about the whole breaking in issue she said that that should not be an issue so that is out of the question.

You can't use a resonator because there is not enough room under the Jeep to install it.
The resonator is another 14"+ longer and it looks like a small muffler.

bump this ...

does anyone know in fact that a high flo catalytic converter would cause my Dynomax Super turbo cat-bak to be increasedly loud?

It is already going to be a major hassle to take off the cat-bak, send it back, wait for the new Walker Quiet Flow and then have that one installed. I don't want to waste my time if someone feels that won't correct my issue.

I appreciate your help.
