driver seat back mechanism ?? bad design?

My driver seat back frame is not broken, actually they are in good shape, but when I pulled the covers and tore into the mechanism it seems they designed a "cam" and a "bucket" and its this thing that is making the back floppy.

is that cam worn out? does it have a piece of hard plastic around the lobe?
and that is what is worn out?

I have not taken apart any further as that coiled spring is kinda scary to get off and heck can you get it back together if you do?

thanks, chuck

The seats are out of a 93 yj, both driver and passenger tilt and slide, passenger flips.

posting pics is a hastle, but if you have had one apart with covers off, your see this bucket that has play.

I just got my seats back from the upholstering shop. driver seat back still rocks forward a few inches, due to the cam and bucket arrangement that is the small thumb release. what a poor design.

any suggestions? or do they all do this?

dude... post pics or stop asking. Nobody knows what you are talking about.

You can't be bothered to take a picture, but you want someone to go out of their way to help you?

Mike, i dont think I can get a photo of it. its down behind the fabric, you just have to know these seats and how they work. If you have these seats you will know what Im talking about. someone hopefully will read that has these seats and respond.

thanks chucker2

my stock seats were terrible. They were non reclining. I have a '95 ranger and the seats are pretty good. I'd swap that in if i was doing it all over and not spend $500 on steel horse/smittybuilt super seats.

My stock seats are great. Somewhere along the line a fat person probably owned it. They wreck seats.

No, these seats were very good condition when i got them, factory covers were almost perfect for 20 years old. i own 2 complete sets of these seats. I am restoring a cj7. but really like these seats, i located the factory tan levi fabric and had them recovered. BUT, why in the heck do they have this stupid cam that is "loose". Again, its the driver side that "flips" forward. that small thumb latch on the back is connected to the small cam i ma talking about. maybe someone will respond that knows these seats better than I.

thanks

The release might be worn down a little, my seat has a bit of play in it. I'm not sure if the passenger does or not.

My driver seat does the same thing. Its in overall good condition but the back flops forward and back a few inches, Im assuming because of what youre talking about. Ive done some research only to find threads like this where people just tell the OP that the stock seats are junk and to replace them. I, like yourself, like the later YJ big bolster reclining seats and would love to find a fix for this
