Do I need to regear?

I local guy is wanting to trade his 33 BFGs for my 31 Mastercrafts. I have a 2.5 lift on my YJ. I drive the interstate everyday cruising around 60-65 with around 1600rpm. Im really wanting to upgrade to these tires but i want to know what I'm getting myself into before I commit. My jeep is just a weekend warrior and i dont do any crawling. Just trails and the occasional mud hole. Below are my specs for the jeep. Do i really need to regear?

1995 Jeep Wrangler YJ
6 Cylinder
5 Speed Standard
*Stock Driveline*
2.5 RC Lift
31/10.50/R15 Mastercraft MT

Wanting to upgrade to BFG 33/12.50/R15

You'll lose some on the high way and into 4th gear a lot more, especially on hills, most likely. assuming you have 3.07 gearing.. but take a look at your diffs and see what you have..

Do you need to regear? No. Personally there are bigger things to spend your money on than regearing at this point. At a fraction of the cost you can buy axles out of a 4 cylinder. Manual is 4.10 and ideal but the auto gearing is still a drastic improvement over your stock gearing. If you feel the need to take it offroad a lot then look into a replacement ford explorer rear axle that also comes in the 3.54, 3.73 and 4.10 gears. Its a straightforward swap with some pinion and brake adjustment and a driveline adapter.

Just a thought.

So would I be good without it? I mean, my stock axles can hold up the 33s? I don't wheel it hard even when i go off road.

I broke a D35 with 33's behind a 4banger. Hit a patch of ice then dry pavement . Snapped both shafts and cracked the carrier all in one shot

I just upgraded from 31s to 33s KM2s two days ago. 3 speed auto here with 3.55s It gets me to work and back, completely drivable and goes 70mph no problem on the interstate. With 3.07s it'll still get you places and you're going to want to regear that much sooner. Go with new axles, people ask more $$ to regear than to rebuild an engine these days.

I grabbed an 8.8 with 4.10s from a junk yard, still looking for a d30 of a 4 banger with 4.11s. That'll be perfect with auto and 33s. Even with manual and 33s it'll work great. Your 5th will only be used on flats and 4th up hills.

As far as d35 goes, I've seen people wheel on 35s and beat on it then drive home.

I'm taking my chances as well with 33s next weekend. If I blow it up, 8.8 goes in that much sooner.
