Do 31's really rule?

95 yj 2.5 squirrel. 2.5 suspension lift. A daily runner and weekend trail rig. stock danas 35/30. My question: 31's or 30's on jeep canyon alloy wheels. I want to go 10.5 on the width, I like the look of the wider tire. Seems people are steering me to 9.50 width. I'm upgrading from stock steels 28", and going with jeep alloys. Do 31's really rule?

i am currently running 31x10.50s right now. i love them. i have had no issues with traction or running them at a lower pressure. i cant drop the pressure to much or i'll be on the rim the whole time but they perform better than the 30x9.50s the jeep came with

I wouldn't say that 31's rule even though that's what I have on my Jeep. It seems to be about the largest size you can go with without starting to do more involved and expensive mods. You shouldn't have any problems with 10.5" width.

i mean rule for a dual purpose rig of course. its good to hear you are liking the 31 10.5 combo. i was considering possibly 30" 10.5, not too sure though, sounds like 31 10.5 is better

i have the 258 so i can't comment on engine power/transmission ratios.

31x10.5 on mine and the extra width actually helps with handling and off-road traction.

alacran is right, anything bigger than 31s, and you need to regear the axles (around $1000 for both - bought and installed), not to mention a lift kit, brake lines, bigger rims, bigger tires, etc etc

I had 32's on a 10" rim and that was kinda wide. I've got my 35's on 8" rims and thats not bad.

you don't have to, but I recommend it, I'm upgrading to a set of 4 banger axles once I get some money, 3.07s on 32s suck, but I can still use 5th on the highway without a trailer, so it's not too bad.

I run 31s on stcok axles (3.07s) and can go almost anywhere. The guys in my club call my jeep "The magic jeep", mainly because it does alot that no one would think it could. If you want a nice jeep that can do decent trails and also drive everyday 31s are fine. Once you become a better driver offroad you can do alot with any amount of lift or tire size.

31's are an all around good size to get you around modest trails and keep decent mileage and drive ability on a not heavily modified rig with stock gears. IMHO the only thing that is important is that the tire/lift combo you are running enables you to do the type of wheeling that you enjoy.

I have a worn out 2.5L that has about 40 HP, and I run 31's just fine. I actually drove the Jeep when I first got it with 33's for a while.

If I can get my Jeep running good again some day, I always planed on doing that 2.5 RC lift and 31's

Right now I have 30x9.5s with a 1" shackle lift and TJ flares. Looks pretty good me thinks.

I like the way my Jeep is now but I'd jump at 31's if I had the chance in a heartbeat.

it was a rough country 4" then this is it clean and level these were the old springs that aren't as good as the new ones i've heard are. it sagged to about 3" of lift. but while i was in high school it did the job now i'm on 35's with an 8" wide rim which i love
