diy soundbar

i'm buying an audio system piece by piece right now, as one of my projects to tackle when i make it home from college for the summer. I have a stock sound bar with two small 4" speakers in not too great of shape, i was wondering if anyone ever fabbed up their own sound bar? or if you wouldn't be able to make it look right? thanks for any insight.

There are a couple of web pages I've seen where people have built their own soundbar. Here's one.

http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/...ad.php?t=43362

It's not hard to to do, it's just an enclosure mounted to the roll bars.

Based on that thread I'd imagine it wouldn't be too hard to do one for yourself. Biggest thing I can think of would be make sure it's weatherproof if you're going to be running with no top/bikini top.

Been looking at building myself a sound bar and overhead console as well, along with marine grade waterproof speakers in it.

Just my .

Yah, it doesn't look too challenging, i wonder what type of look you would get with this type of sound bar, and an overhead console of the same type. has anyone seen an overhead console made of mdf or similar material? rather than those made of metal. i can't weld.

Just build it out of wood and fiberglass over the wood to make it waterproof. Cheep and easy

fiberglass would be really cool. i've done some searching on fiberglassing, and can't find much of a "how to", does anyone know of a good thread on here, or write up on another page?

Can't you just replace the speakers in the stock sound bar with aftermarkets? That's kinda what I was hoping to do. Anyone care to kill my dreams here?

I dont know of any threads (havent looked) but it is quite easy to do.

1) make a form out of wood or other suitable material
2) if it is a solid form cut fiberglass mat and set loosly over the form
3) mix resin and hardner and paint on with cheep paint brush
4) contuine to add glass and resin untill desired thickness and coverage is met (2 layers for a solid form, 3 to 4 for a loose form)
5) prep for paint or cover with cloth or fabric.

yes, you can put aftermarkets in the stock sound bar, but my sound bar's fabric has a few tears on the sides, and with it being my first extended period of time to work on my jeep, i was kind of looking for an "original" type project to do. i hope i can get half of the stuff done i'm planning on doing.

I also replaced the stock speakers with afterarkets, sounds much better with higher end speakers and tweeters, I would retain the original body of the sound bar, cut bigger holes for 6.5 inch and tweeters or mids, and get weather resitant fabric and reupholster, would look like new and sound much better.
