Distributor shaft up and down movement - need help.

hey guys , been a long time since i have posted here..life got busy. anyways, i just pulled my cap on my 4.2L/258CID to check it's condition and noticed that the rotor is chewing it up! I pulled up on the dist shaft and found about 1/4 to 3/8" of play (up and down movement). i know this is bad, so a couple of q's here:

Is this a common problem with the 258?

has any one had any experience with this problem? if so details please...

thx guys. good to be back.
