Distributor binding

I have an 89 YJ. replacing the motor with an 4.2 from an 82 CJ.
When trying to set the timing, the distributor turnd easily for a bit, then binds up so tightly it can't be turned anymore. It is bad enough to break the drive gear on a stock distributor, and now I have an aftermarket HEI distributor that binds up as well.
I'm wondering if the oil pump may be worn and allowing the shaft to wobble just enough to create this problem?
Any other ideas?
