They are not the same.
I went into the garage, removed from my 4.0 and my kids 4.2.

But, if you want one, the 4.0 can be trimmed shorter. I can give you the measurements for total length, the add and full line.

True story, but that's why the item description has the following note...

"To use this dipstick 87-95 Wrangler YJ owners must order MOPAR Oil Dipstick Tube, 53020782. For all other Jeep applications, this is a replacement part."

Thank you; after rereading my response from yesterday I realize it was rather misleading and should've been worded better. My point was you could use either dipstick but it must match to the correct tube, as already pointed out.

I will settle for the measurements for now if you can Chris I just picked up this Jeep and don't know if the thing is any good even. I don't want to have to buy a tube and a stick just to see if there is any oil in the thing, At least till I hear it run anyway. Thanks for the replies and all the info you guys are great. Love them Jeeps this one is an 89 with just over 100k been sittin for for alot years at a garage in in my town hope'n it's going to be ok. Inspection sticker is from 08 so it.s been a while.

Measure and mark the "Add" line and "Safe" zone too. That could be a bonus.

The measurements I took are from...

4.2 dipstick length 22" exactly
from bottom to add line: 1 1/4"
from bottom to full line: 1 7/8"

4.0 dipstick length 23 3/4"
from bottom to add 2 1/4"
from bottom to add 2 15/16"
