Replace '91 alum. valve cover with '97 steel one?

The 1991 YJ 4.0 that I am fixiing up has a solid looking cast aluminum valve cover that has a crack in the side... Can I take one of the newer stamped steel ones from a 1997 4.0 and use that on the 1991 4.0? I went to the auto parts store and had them lay the 1991 cork gasket over the 1997 rubber/steel one and they look the same...

So no one has tried to replace their '91 alum. valve cover with '97 steel one?
