Died on highway this morning
My 89 died on the way top work this morning. One minute I was cruising at about 65, then the engine hesitated, lost power, and quit. It would not restart. I recently nuttered and set timing between 8-9 degrees before. It had never run as smooth as this. It was towed back to the house, where it will sit until I can come up with a fix. Any thoughts? Thanks.
Just did new oil, filter, plugs, as well.

Was there a strong smell of gas or does it not even crank. Could be fuel pump.

It cranks, but will not turn over. I don't think it is the pump but I will look for sure. Any tips? Or just listen for it to kick on when the key is turned?
No strong gas odor, but then again I wasn't paying attention to it at the time. I was just angry and becoming late.

Well when mine went it smelled like gas really strong and there was a puddle of gas under the tank, could maybe just be the fuel filter. Does is sound like it is not getting gas?

you have to do it step by step...
is there fuel - do you have a spray of fuel in the carb - if not, disconnect near the fuel filter and put end of line in a plastic cup - crank engine - does fuel fill the cup, if not then start looking at the fuel pump is there spark, remove one plug, touch it to the block w/ insulated pliers - have a friend crank. - either there's spark or not. - if not, does coil + have 6-12V with key in run - if not look at resistor wire or ig switch. - if so then start looking at ign module. etc etc you need to track it down |

I will look at it and let you know what I find. Thank you all for the help. I won't get the chance to do anything until tomorrow. I won't get home until about 9 tonight and the light will be gone. I will post my findings.

Unless you've swapped it out with an electric pump you won't hear it because it's a mechanical pump. I'm going with the Ignition Control Module.

Another idea. I had a similar problem with my TJ. It turned out to be the timing sensor (not sure what exactly it is called) basically just a little magnet that senses the flywheel posistion. Not sure if older jeeps used them too. Too fix it i just cleaned it off, unplugged it and plugged it back in.

Resurrection Of Thread
Hi,
Using the search feature, I found this thread. THE EXACT SAME THING happened to me in my '89 4cyl. 5 days ago. I have not begun to tear into the problem. Was there ever a resolution from this? Please let me know Thanks |

just went through this exact same thing I replaced several things so not sure which one it was Ignition mod
coil wires plugs distributor pick up I think it may be Ignition mod because I nutter it and crimped and taped the wires and I think Water shorted out the module (come to find out after a 500 bill from a mechanic) and did not know where to start because most everything was new .but turned out to have shorted the coil and module Hope this helps it was a pain in the *** Also before this it did it too and I dropped the tank to find a peice of old hose in there stopping the fuel so you may want to drop and clean your tank if you never had. |
