Dash idea

So I want to do a custom dash for my 87 YJ. I have a couple of problems though.
1. I don't want to spend the money for a "custom" dash from a company. I'd rather make it myself so it's just the way I want it.
2. I don't have any welding equipment or experience. I do however have some experience with plastic welding in small applications.
Now given this I am thinking about the possibility of a full custom plastic dash that's welded. Any thoughts from the all mighty jeep pros?
This would obviously be lighter than a metal dash and with the proper prep would be able to last a good while.

might be better to make the plastic one as a mock-up, then use that as a plug to form a fiberglass dash over.

Without welding skills, fiberglass is the cheapest and easiest material to use. I will caution you that you do need to reinforce fiberglass, but designing and laying glass is as simple as using a cardboard form, some mold release, and the time and effort to lay the mat and mix the juice. Just make sure SURE you mix it in correct proportions thoroughly or you will end up with a sticky gob of crap.

ask me how I know...

I am well versed in composite buildup. I used to be a crew chief for two formula one race planes at Reno but I don't have the room to do that here. I live in a townhouse in HI and I don't have a garage.
