The darkside

I crossed over to the darkside this weekend.

While I don't normally like non tech threads, I wanted to say thanks to the YJ forum. This has been a second home for me for the last 3 1/2 years, and a sincere thanks goes out. I have learned an enormous amount, and hope I have given some back.

I plan on participating in the YJ tech as I think I've got a bit to offer, but I will be straying to the TJ section now and again so I can brush up on a bit of TJ tech.

My new rig. It will be getting some 36's in a few weeks....but it's a great rig.

97 TJ
4.0L
3speed auto tranny
231 with tera 4:1, 2low, SYE with front/rear CV shafts
4" superlift suspension lift
Dana 30 with trutrac LSD
Ford 8.8 with Eaton E-locker
Rusty's lower control arms and adjustable uppers
33's on some 15x10 hellcats
Warn 9000Xi winch
Smittybilt front/rear bumpers and rock sliders

And air conditioning! Man did I miss a/c.

Still have the yj or sold it for a tj? I like tj's for their ride and flex. I don't like the dash as much. Anything grows on you if it is yours and you put work into it. I am sure that your TJ will turn out even sicker than your yj. Not that tjs are better, just building rigs is a evolutionary process and each one gets better. My scouts from my earlier days look hack to me know and I will be redoing alot of my previous work to make them cleaner. So is the tj getting some one tons? Prorock 60s? I know you won't be happy with 33s and a 30 front. Give us yj folk the scoop on what is to come for the TJ. Enjoy the AC and cady ride.

So what pushed you to sell the YJ if you don't mind me asking. Oh and enjoy the TJ, I'll be looking forward to see what other mods it gets.

Did you sell the YJ or are you parting it out?

It was a flatout trade.

We each got what we wanted in the trade.

He got 60's and 42's.

I got tera 4:1 and a/c

That's a generic comparison...but you see where I'm going with it.

The rear axle was JUST put in...literally a week before we traded, and basically for the trade. New brackets, gears, locker, rockcrusher diff cover, brake lines...etc. That 8.8 cost as much to put in as BOTH my 60's cost me to put in the YJ.

The tera 4:1 and 2low kit are worth as much as my tires were. The winch was worth as much as the sbc engine was. The new control arms cost as much as my XJ leafs cost to put on.

I got an extra set of 4" springs, control arms and spacers for the TJ. I got Air conditioning, a comfortable ride for both my family and me DAILY.

What did he get? 60's, 42's and a SBC.........that he can only enjoy once every third weekend. For all those that daily drive your rig....and that's most of us on these forums, consider it if someone took your rig and said you have to work on it on the weekends and only get to drive it once or twice every other weekend.

Having a trail rig is great.......if all you want out of your jeep is a trail rig. Mine was ONLY a trail rig. And having that kind of money sit 25 days out of 30 every month was just not why I got into jeeps. I got into jeeps to enjoy them. I enjoy driving my rig daily. I enjoy waving, bouncing, crawling and cruising.

While I miss the rig.....it's not for the rig itself. It's because of all the time I spent on it. Hours on hours on it, wrenching. It was part of me. But, all that wrenching was for what? 4 days a month? I just couldn't justify it anymore.

For all those who want 42's and 60's.....make sure of what you want out of your rig. Cause on 42's and 60's......it's one in a hundred that can drive it daily.

Sermon is over.
