That dang rear diff just won't stop leaking!

Over the past year I've resealed the rear diff 2x and had a shop do it once. Every time it lasts about 3 months before the cover starts leaking again. The vent line is clean and clear. The cap on the top of the vent line moves and allows air out just fine. I don't get it!!! What do I have to do to keep this thing from dripping on my garage floor?

Have you tried a lube locker gasket? I have them on my axles and they haven't leaked a drop

Adopt your pets. Don't shop for them.

I haven't tried lube lockers - yet.

The front diff is fine. The rear diff leaks. This is the only vehicle I've had this problem with. I'm tempted to put a micrometer on the cover to see if it's warped.

You would check the cover with a straight edge and feeler gauges.

What sealant did you use? Did you clean with alcohol and thoroughly dry the diff and cover before placing the cover? Did you let it cure overnight before refilling?

I would use both a micrometer and a straight edge. The micrometer to see if I have varying thicknesses around the cover and a straight to see if it's twisted. As for cleaning, you could have eaten off the axle before I applied new sealant. I've used black, blue and orange RTV. I've followed the directions for application to the letter (assemble immediately or wait until tacky depending on which one was used) and I did them after work so the vehicle sat until at least the next day as this is not my DD.

I'm also considering just upgrading the covers to Solid covers. On my last outing I beat the hell out of both my front and rear covers in a rock field where I got pinned between two dinner table sized "rocks".

There will be a straw that breaks the camel's back. Maybe not this one, or the next, but it'll come. Mine was a busted lower shock mount.

I use a product called "the right stuff" after it is fully cured, you won't need bolts to hold the cover on, ha ha, I don't recommend this.

I use a standard paper-type gasket and it has yet to leak. I don't use any sealant, etc. on it either...K.I.S.S. I thought about lube lockers, but the paper is cheap enough to be cost effective for lube change intervals.

The lube lockers really shine during trail fixes and saving time during the maintenence process. Nobody wants to wait on the trail for rtv to set up.

Yup, sooner or later... mine was harsh. I did a stupid and bought an ARB for the D35 (I was a noob). The housing did fine with 33's, but for some reason, after three years of trails, the ARB exploded. By then I learned you don't spend for an ARB for a D35 (or anything for a D35 really), and spent the money for an ARB for the 8.8.

My tipping point was the EZ locker going out and not turning the tires, two time lower shock mount breakage and toasted the outer bearings...then came the 8.8.

As for the leak, try to get a cover from a junkyard and see if it helps. I use to use paper gaskets but found it was easier to keep some RTV in my toolbag.

I just put on a lube locker rear diff gasket for my 35 and it still leaks!! I am gonna give it one more try. If not then I will use an entire tube of gasket sealer!!!

'87 reg. historic, 2" bds springs, 1" boom shackles, 1" daystar BL, 31" Intereco trxus, Crager soft 8's, steel braided brake extensions, monsta liner
