dana 30 u-joint caps

how do you get them off and do the just slide through, it looks like they have a lip that sits on the outside of the axle shaft

there are C clips on the inside i believe but if you get those out then yes they slide out, read those write ups though they saved me big time.

any way you can bend the ears when using a vice? i had a friend doing his the other day with a vice and when he went to put the new u-joint in, both sides were completely in, but the u-joint stuck out about 1/8 of an inch??

it's possible, but it would be very obvious if they're off that far. i'm with Tomb, he probably got the wrong joints. either that or it just looked like they were all the way in and he had a needle or two out of position and holding the cap out a bit. happens all the time.

here is another question for him... Yeah, the guy may have been using the wrong Ujoint. But WHY was he replacing them to begin with? Did he break a Ujoint in that axle? blowing a Ujoint can totaly fook up the lobes on the axles.

no..but they were really going bad. i could place my fingers on the joint, and wiggle it by hand

Fabulous write ups, gents. Thanks much. I'm tearing down and rebuilding a set of '73 Wagoneer Dana 44's (QuadraTrack case - soon to be a Dana 18 with Warn Overdrive) and this is on the list of stuff to do. Have parts, budgeting time
