Ok so I have a 95 YJ with the 2.5 and the D30 with 4.10's.
I am looking at switching to a XJ 30 up front with one piece, how do I tell if this reverse rotation issue?
Do I have reverse rotation now?
If yes, then I will still need them in the new 30?
If no, ok!
Also, Cherokee 30's are HP correct?
How bout giving me some gear names to research?
I am going to be installing 4.88's in the 30 and the 44 I am getting at the end of the month! I still drive my rig on the road but plan to have lockers in both, probably lunch box up front and what should I go with in the rear. I plan to run 33-35" tires
Thanks, im constantly learning more and more bout gears and what not.
There really is no such thing as reverse rotation gearsets for a D30. They are either reverse cut or standard cut & rotate in the same fashion as standard cut gears.
Basically, a high pinion D30 (HPD30) has the pinion gear exit the differential above centerline. A standard low pinion D30 (notice I didn't type HP) has the pinion gear exit the differential below the centerline. So since the ring & pinion gear sets push against each other at different angles, the gears are machined differently & HP gear sets are slightly stronger because when going forward, you are "pushing" against the strong side of the teeth.
Yes, a YJ's HPD30 uses reverse cut gears.
It might be easier to swap in a set of axle shafts from a TJ or XJ & relocate the passenger side seal to the carrier. This is a very popular mod.
