dana 30 problems

I'm having problems with my d30. Spins just fine until its locked in. All the small gears turn but the ring and pinion don't turn but 10-15 degrees then it locks up and won't turn any more until the teeth slip on the ring and pinion. What could be causing it to bind like this?

Can you jack up the axle and spin the front driveshaft?

I don't have access to a jack right now but I'm guessing it won't.

It only does it when the two front tires are locked together. IIvtaken the actuator off and used my fingers to lock and unlock it. So I know for sure its only when both axels are locked together.

Does the pinion yoke have any slop in it? You may need to crack the diff open and take a look inside.

So with the differential cover off like it was in the picture in the other thread, can you spin the driveshaft one full revolution?

Nope. Lock or unlocked can't turn it by hand. I can tap it around with a hammer.

Could the pinion bearing be messed up and causing this? Carrier bearings?

Very possible. It looks rusty in there. How was the fluid?

Looks like more rusty water than oil on the gears and the cross pin. I would hazard to guess the bearings are all shot.

Is there shiny particles in the fluid? Kind of look like glitter?

Don't bother washing it out if the water was muddy. Bearings are probably toast.

Based on that you should change all the fluids on your drivetrain...and like Nick said, your bearings are toast.
