Curious about this....

If I put the transfer case to N, then put the transmission into gear and release the clutch, are the internals of the transmission rotating as they would if I was actually moving? IOW, is the output shaft rotating at a speed commensurate with normal driving even though the transfer case's N status is not transmitting the torque to the wheels?

If your engine is running, then yes.

This is also the way to flat tow a manual YJ. Trans in 1st. or reverse, & transfer case in neutral.

The transmission will still do exactly as it would if the t-case was in any other position, with the case in neutral the input shaft is disconnected from the main shaft.

If the case was in neutral no you couldn'y "drive". You could be towed.

It wouldnt make any difference if where you were going was constantly down hill (both ways) basically with the transfer case in neutral it would be like your engine was on and nothing inbetween the axles...

in other words your not putting any power to the ground... you would have to be in 2HI or 4HI or 4LO to go anywhere under power

I wonder if it would idle in fifth gear with the tcase in N, since there is no resistance on the output shaft.

Useless experiment, just curious.

I'd say yes, as there's virtually zero torque load on the engine in that case.
