COST? Bottom End (only) Rebuild
Possible spun a bearing... Growling near bottom of water pump with some associated ticking...
4cyl, 158,000, Manual Trans - Any idea what a bottom end rebuild would run at a shop - no frills/extra's job?
I know this is kind of a open ended question - how many miles; how much wear; was it well taken care of; "your in this deep might as well change xxx too" ...this I understand. The question is: approx $'s to do the bottom end at a shop?
Thanks

Most shop "rebuilds" cost alot more than buying a "remanufactured" short block.
Do a search online and see if anyone sells just the shortblock remanufactured, then compare the prices of a rebuild at a local shop,i think you'll be surprized.
Plus most engine remanufacture's have a warranty on them, have yet to see a shop rebuild one with a mileage/time warranty.

When the time comes (I have a feeling it will be withing 1 or 2 years - a little knock going on down there now...) I'm going with a reman bottom, I can rebuild a head myself. A lot of labor to swap everything over, but a HUGE saving in money.

I did a quick search just out of curiousity since i also have the 2.5.
I couldn't find any short block kits, but alot of long block ,averaging around 1200.00 but thats with warranties too,one being a 7 year/70,000 mile warranty.
If your looking to go cheap as possible,i would think someone here might have a good running used 2.5 laying around after swapping out for a V8 or 4.0.
Might worth asking, might get the whole engine real cheap and worth paying the shipping, then just put all new gaskets and seals in it while you have it out and put it in,in my case i would put a new cam, lifters and timing chain in too.

The jeep is (retired dad's). Looking for cost effective fix. Not even positive of the failure yet.
