Coolant Problem

Just rebuilt everything for my 88 wrangler 4.2 258. It ran great for about 550 miles after rebuild, then the water pump started to leak. I changed the water pump and now the coolant is filling into the overflow tank and spraying all over the engine compartment after driving a mile or so down the road. All the hoses are connected correctly. I just changed the head gasket and test drove it again and I will get a mile down the road and the same problem will occur. It will not happen when it is idling in the driveway. This is our only problem with the jeep and we are out of ideas on what to try next.

Is it v belt, or serp? If serp, you may have gotten the wrong rotation water pump.

The cap should hold pressure up to about 15 psi before releasing water to the overflow.

Cracked head or block. Did you bore the cylinders oversize?

418 miles on 19 gallons of gas. Can't beat the BBD !

It is a v belt. Radiator is new along with the cap.

It's got to have something to do with the new water pump, whether like J-Bolty said wrong rotation or just plain the wrong one. Didn't do it before the new one, right?

Same water pump by part number and this issue has never occurred before.

To see it happen, you might have to idle it in the drive......but...make it happen. Work the throttle and rev it to 2000 and hold it while you watch.

Axles and bolts and springs....Oh My!
