Coil Conversion for YJ and more

I know some people think it's blasphemy to think of changing a YJ to a coil over set up, but I'm not one of them. I love the way my 95 YJ looks and I know it inside and out. I don't care for the TJ's and the new JK's are just out of my price range. I've looked up as much information as I can...I think. I don't want one of the bolt on kits, sounds a little...flimsy to me. But I want coils front and rear as well. I was planning on getting a Black Diamond XCL when I first started looking into it, but they are no longer made (they made it the X2 which is bolt on). I couldn't find any pictures, installed and/or un-installed of some of the other ones I've heard of. Let alone being able to find one for sale. So if anyone knows where I could find pictures of one, and where I could buy one, please let me know.

On a side note once in awhile I get some ideas of stuff to do to my YJ but a lack of an abundance of money holds me up. My latest idea was to see if it'd be possible to fab up Nissian Skyline drivetrain into a YJ, engine and all. Granted I don't know how practical twin turbo's would be on a Jeep off-road, but you'd have to admit that it'd be a really fast Jeep on road...in a straight line anyways, I wouldn't want to try turning it at all.

Thanks for looking and I'd appreciate any and all comments.

It's called "4link" and "3link" setups. If you don't want to "bolt-on" anything, then I make the assumption that you have basic fabrication skills.

You should look at kits like this for the front:

http://www.polyperformance.com/shop/Jeep-YJ-Weld-On-3-Link-Front-Kit-p-2390.html

And this for the rear:

http://www.polyperformance.com/shop/Jeep-YJ-Weld-On-4-Link-Rear-Kit-p-2389.html

Or do both 4link front and rear.

Add 4 coilovers and you have yourself a coiled rig that is capable and reliable.

one of the easiest way to convert o coil springs in a yj, is get yourself a rolling chassis from a TJ and take you yj tub and put it on the tj frame and go from there, You can find a good chassis on the internet from one of the those jeep recyclers. We are in the process of doing one of these conversion, and will start as soon as the guy gets all the stuff he needs to do this conversion all at once.. Hopefullly will be posting pictures and a writeup once we get started..

TnT Customs has a full coil conversion kit. Extremely nice.

Tnt Customs

Also, call Clayton Suspensions. Their coil conversion kit is really nice as well. They do not have it on their website but they do have a YJ kit available.

All of these will require you to have some pretty good fabbing skills.

he was asking about "coil overs." tjs have a regular coil spring and shock setup. i really don't think doing a frame-off rebuild of a hybrid tj-yj would be the easiest option and one even worthy of being suggested particularly with a standard coil setup being inferior to a coil over. after you hate the tj suspension and hack it all off to do a custom coil-over you will have waisted all that time and effort.

He's right. I'm not looking for just a coil spring system, I'm looking for Coil-over. A frame off with a TJ frame would be even more time consuming than doing just the suspension. The Polypreformance system is definitely more what I'm looking for, but I don't know what coilover springs to get. I want as much travel as I can get. If anyone has input on that as well I'd appreciate it.

i know you were looking for coilovers but heres a few pictures of my YJ with stcok XJ coils in the rear. total build cost was under 200.00 since i did all the work my self and thats including the cost of the HIEM's. the lower links are made from 2'' 1/4'' wall tube sleeved with a metric sized tube inside it. uppers are the same metric tube. all the threaded bungs i made my self along with all the tabs.
its the same thing your asking about only i used coils not coilovers or air shocks. the fab work would be the same, but the stock coils work very well. i dont limit the coils i let them flex past the coil buckets, they self aling when they compress.

only had one pop out past the top bucket, but i was jumping the jeep and it couldn't line up fast enough when i landed. heres a few driveway pictures of when i finished last year, testing the flex. good luck with your build, jason.

I have Eibach and QA1 springs on my coilovers. Hypercoils are good too. Your travel will be dictated by your driveshafts and steering.

I'm in the process of planning out a coilover conversion as well.

I was looking into the rockcrawler 8" coilover stretch kit at first, but then read a few bad reviews of it over on Pirate. Now I am looking into getting the Poly Performance link kits mentioned above or the ones from Gen Right.

I'd love to build my own set up but I don't know anything about figuring out link geometry
