Code Readers?

92 YJ 4.0L, I am still tracking down my sputtering problem, at all RPM's but seems to go away when in 4th or 5th on the highway, even at 2k Rpms at high speed it is fine. however in stop and go traffic it appears when in 3rd at 2k 30mph or so it sputters more often. Can heat buildup have something to do with throwing off the sensor on the mass air flow sensor?

Ultimately in regards to the code readers, if I am not getting any engine dash lights or errors via the key\off trick to read the computer will a code reader really tell me much more?
