Throwout bearings will make a lot of noise if they are bad. Basically a spun bearing. You will notice it most when you feather the clutch and as you are starting to press the clutch pedal down.

I had a throwout bearing make light noise as you describe when not pressed. The bearing just slightly is up against the pressure plate tabs enough to move the bearing race.
It seems like a bad throwout bearing from your description to me.

It's your whole clutch you will be replacing if this is the case. Transmission has to come out if your throwout bearing is bad, and a new clutch system installed. Approx 150 bucks for parts, and the flywheel may or may not need surfacing.

For the little bit more work and a couple of more dollars, I'd suggest haveing the flywheel done. But it's not a must do.
