clutch install writeup?
hi, we are about to install a new transmission, but neither me nor any of my friends have ever installed a clutch. Does anyone know where there is a writeup we can look at?

Get a Haynes or Chilton manual. If you are unable to buy one, go to the public library and look there; copy the pages you need. And please, please...use a torque wrench.

If you can change the transmission the clutch isn't hard.
Take out the bolts and it will fall right down along with the pressure plate. Once it's down remove the flywheel and have it cut. A clutch shop will sell you a shim to put behind the flywheel and bring it out to it's original thickness. A shop that has a flywheel machine probably won't and you sould ask how thick the wheel is supposed to be, how much is taken off already, and get the correct shim. Bolt the flywheel back up using a torque wrench Install the clutch disk and pressure plate with the included alingment tool, again use a torque wrench. Than's it. |

I actually just installed a clutch something i've never done before and it was relatively easy just make sure that the clutch is centered and that you do use a torque wrench.

I found that the hardest part was adjusting the transmission on the jack just right to slip the input shaft through the clutch and pilot bearing. Just don't force it, and take your time. I threw a few cursing fits during, but i'm glad I did it right.
Also, I found on the 4cylinder that if you unbolt the exhaust downtube from the header, it gives you alot more space to work. Not sure about the 6cylinder though.

If you are going to reuse your pressure plate, make sure that you put alignment marks on the flywheel and pressure plate so that it will match up properly when you put it back together.
