Cleaning up an old jeep, 1989 Wrangler

I just bought a 1989 Jeep Wrangler off my uncle and im cleanin it up. It runs beautifully and he did a great job taking care of it. But i do need some tips!

Not too bad =]

But heres something i want to fix.

The rear bumper is a rusted mess. Im totally new to jeeps and cars all alike (im 17, this is my first car)

What can i use to wear some of that rust down on that back bumper? Any recommendations on what I can use to re-coat that black?

i have a few spots of rust on my jeep that i need to clean up. but since i'm no painter and i hate rattle cans, i'm just going to sand it down, prime it and throw some body armor over it. you can pick up a thing that will cover the tailgate just fine

Por 15 was my first suggestion, but a 17 yr old with little disposable income, hmm. How about either flat rustoleum or 1 gal of herculiner. Look at their website for rebates. Dont buy the kit, just the gallon then use a chip brush & gloves and you've at least 2 week ends of projects between bumpers, undercarriage & floor.

Rustoleum rusty metal primer is a less expensive alternative. But as with all primers it's porous, so be sure to paint over it with something to keep moister out permanently.

Okay great, thanks for all the help. I'll probably just grab some of that rustoleum primer for now.

Thanks everyone =]

Make sure you take care of the rust on that tailgate while you're at it. That'll eat up your body real quick.

A newer productto consider by Rustoleum is "Rust Reformer".
It is a black primer that causes a chemical reaction with rust, turning the rust itself into primer.
