CJ Swing out Tire carrier on a YJ?
Hello everyone,
I was wondering, I've done a search on this on the Forum but couldn't find the details I needed. I'm thinking about putting in CJ swing away tire carrier on my YJ but was wondering what mods I need to do for that to work on my YJ. I've read of some YJ owners doing this and I feel that would be less expensive than buying a new swing out tire carrier. First, How difficult would it be to make it work? And 2nd, Would I also have to replace my tailgate for a CJ tailgate? Thx in advance.

I have done it but i don't have any pics.
The cj tire carrier fits in the yj tailgate hinges that are already on the tub. All you will need to do here is but the bolts in. The latch that holds it on the other side will fit with a little bit of drilling. Drill holes in the tub and bolt on. Tire carrier finished. Tailgate, you can do a couple of differnt things here: 1)Remove stock hindges and leave big unpainted arears showing and add cj tailgate hinges. 2) Get a cut off wheel and cut the hindges flush with the tailgat. leaves matching paint, looks good. Add cj tail gat hindges, which can be picked up for 20 bucks on ebay. ( this is what i did) 3)get a cj tailgate and hindges and install I have a 33' tire on mine and it works great, will probably hold a 35. It doesn't squek or vibrate and is really solid. I will see what i can do about getting some pictures. |

I like how you flushed the tail lights! Good show. Are you doing a drop down tailgate too? I have to say that it looks like something you can make out of square stock with a pipe bender, but clearly buying something ready made is a LOT easier.
