CJ style rear flares on a YJ
I like the look of the round rear wheel openings under the stock fender flares. I'd like to remove them but I can appreciate not wanting to throw stones and other fun stuff at unwilling participants. I guess there's also the need to pass motor vehicle inspection and avoid summons from the local 5-0. That being said, I could dig the unobtrusive and old school look of simple rubber CJ style flares or even the "universal" type that are available. Has anyone tried to fit CJ flares or used the universals? Any pros and/or cons?

I put aftermarket CJ flares on my YJ for the same reason. To make them work I had to cut the inner lip off of them, front and rear, and then... Re-arch the rears and drill new holes for mounting, fronts take a some figuring where you want them as they are also not a perfect fit. You will need to modify or change the front side marker lights, I went to small round LED type. The flares are a bit short both front and rear but I don't really notice and I like them alot better than the YJ flares. I'll try to remember to post a pic tonight when I get home.

Thanks for the post Lance. I was just gonna do the rears and maybe flat fender the fronts with a sawsall. Pics would help alot, thanks.

check out Jeepsolot's build, he has put CJ style rear flares on his. the opening for the rear wheel is identical on CJs and YJs so they will fit, just not sure about if the bolt holes line up. will hinder a little bit of clearance, but i agree with you in your liking of the look. i say go for the CJ rear flares, and do some tube fenders or flat-fendering for the front

I have the bestop cj style flares and they went right on and I really like the look of them. If I had thought of it or had known stock cj flares could be used on the rear of the yj I probably would of just done that. The bestop flares are kinda pricey but I got them cheap from quadratecs clearance section a few years back. I does help keep the side of the jeep clean though especially in the winter, I dont miss having my windows covered in so much salt I couldnt see out so I guess I dont regret getting them at all

Here's mine with the CJ rear flares.
![]() I got mine from Q-tec several years ago, and, to be quite honest, they suck quality-wise. They were the "factory style" CJ flares, and they were cheap plastic ones. Mine faded pretty bad and they crack very easily. I highly suggest getting rubber ones, if you can. Jerry ![]()

They look good... I might even investigate the universal flares they sell, they're rubber and come with or with out an internal steel/wire outer bead. I like the older utilitarian look. Thanks for the feed back gents!
