Is it just me, or does anyone else mentally yell "Jackpot!" when they actually do use 5th with a setup similar to this?

I know, I'm sad. Hahaha...
Yeah, I have...

i don't know about that. we have had that poor little truck in some pretty hairy spots before. we just keep breaking it, so it is time to get something different.

most likely we are gonna do a shackle flip for starters, then maybe spring over,AAL,or re-arched springs to get a little more out of it.

your best bet would be a set of 32's and a 2 1/2" lift. 33's will require more lift and will get you into driveshaft angle probs etc. all of which will cost extra $$$.

quick guide for 2.5 stock gears and 33's
1st gear motor struggles to get meats rolling
2nd gear high rpm might get you to 20 mph
3rd gear down hill with a tail wind you might touch 40 just before the pistons come through the hood
4th gear same as third little less rpm
5th gear used for stalling the motor on demand!!

so i take it these little 4 cyl. motors are a not much of a motor then and can't take a beating.

right now he wants to do a shackle flip jsut for starters. then he will figure out the rest once we get it running.

4cly is tough little engine, with the right gearing it would be fine.

well the way you all are talking about it it does not seem to be.

i mean, most 4 bangers i know (ie Chevy iron duke, 22re yota, ford 2.3) will all take a beating, rev till teh valves float and just laugh in your face. you guys act like the 2.5 in the YJ will not last if abuse. Heck, the 4.0 in my ZJ gets beat to death, teh rev limiter is very well tested, and it keeps on ticking with no issues. that is the life this motor will live. High RPMs screaming. if it can't take it, i may try to talk my buddy into not getting it going and saving for a V8 swap.

it all depends on what kind of driver you are and what sort of wheeling you do.

my buddy has a 92 YJ 4cyl with 35s and 4:88 and it is a very capible rig and his daily driver.

it's a great engine, but it's set up in the design process with the opimal pwer range with trans gearing, and axle ratio and tire size.
every time you go up a bit in tire size you throw all that off.

30x9.5's work perfect imo

he already has a set of 31x10.50 that are gonna go on it as soon as he gets is. the tires on it are junk so he is putting the 31's on to get by with and drive on for a short time
