Charging system
My battery went dead without any warning. I jump started the jeep and checked the voltage at the battery terminols. The needle in the volt meter kept going up and down and the battery didn't take a charge from the alternator is this the alternator or the voltage regulator? And where would the voltage regulator be located since it's not on the alternator? THANKS FOR ANY HELP ON THIS MATTER

The voltage reg. is in the computer. First thing I would do is check your grounds and possibly a short. The batt should not just die unless something is left on or there is a short

it's going up and down at idle? it may fluctuate just slightly, but it shouldn't change much. what voltages are you fluctuating between? it sounds like a bad alternator either way. i'd take it off and have it tested at your local auto parts store.
if your voltage was merely low and it appeared as though the alternator was toast i'd suggest checking fusible links or fuses first but that's not the case here....

I believe you VR is inside the alternator. You could have bad cables/connections, but for now assume they are OK. Most people never consider them when inspecting the charging system. With a volt meter test the output voltage of you alternator. Or, If you are coming out in the morning and your battery is dead but after you jump it and drive it a bit it seems to be OK until the next AM when it is dead again you have a drain or you got a bad battery. It won't hold a charge. If your alternator is NG to 'test' it; At night start up your heep put on your lights at hot idle. Note how bright they are. Now bring up your RPMS a bit if they go real bright your altenator could be bad. Remember bad battery cables/connections can cause the same symptoms. |
