Charcoal/Vapor canister bad?

How can I tell if the charcoal/vapor canister is bad in my 87 wrangler? I have the V6. Do you know where I can get another one besides the dealership? Also, are they specific to year or size of engine if I want to try a used one to see if that is my problem? I have a strong/rich gas smell when I shut the Jeep off and it is enclosed (like the garage). Once it colls down, the smell is gone. Thanks!
