I have a leak around my transmission pan gasket. I have the A999 AT. I am going to change the gasket and the filter. When I take the pan off, will that drain the entire fluid contents of the transmission? If so how many quarts of fluid and what is the recommended fluid that I need to go back with. Also is it alright to fill the transmission with fluid through the dipstick tube?

Yes, it will come out from all around the pan so use a very large catch pan. IRRC I purchased 7 qts of ATF+4 trans fluid and I think I had a qt to spare. You refill the trans thru the dipstick tube. There will be some fluid left in the torque converter so it won't take the full capacity to refill. The most important thing is make sure the pan and trans are super clean before removing the pan. You do not want to get any dirt or sand into the trans at all. Keep everything clean. Do not over tighten the pan bolts. Buy a Chilton or Haynes manual. They have all of the torque specs in them and detailed procedures for everything.

Burnerman said it all. I just want to stress the part about not over-tightening the bolts. Also, I want to say the last time I did I only used 4-5 quarts to top it off. I would add a couple quarts then start it up in neutral and check the fluid level and add accordingly. You do not want to overfill the tranny. I accidentally overfilled mine when I added a cooler by about a quart. I ended up with a smoke show when ever I would run the Jeep at high speeds then slowed due to the internal pressure blowing the extra fluid out of the vent. I ended up using an electric fluid pump and sticking the hose down the dipstick tube to suck the extra fluid out. A lot of trouble due to my oversight.

Forgot that! Yes do not overfill. You also want to be sure you buy enough unless you have another way to get to the parts store. If you do have a qt or 2 left over you can use it in the transfer case when you change that...
