Carter replacement

Before any of you say anything.. I have to replace my carter carb to keep it smogable for the next 6 months... so I have a question. there are 2 types of carter carbs for this, one with electronic feedback and one w/o.. Pretty sure I have the w/o. Can someone explain to me the diff? and second can I use the electronic?

Sorry for the green question.

87 YJ

Thanks
Kyle

As far as I'm aware, on an '87 4.2L YJ up through '90, the only emissions legal carb in CA is the Carter BBD w/electronic feedback. It was made as a stop-gap measure for Jeep to keep selling the 4.2L engines and still meet emissions requirements, while also finishing and readying the MPFI 4.0L to replace the 4.2L. An O2 sensor detects rich/lean conditions and the computer sends a signal to the stepper motor to adjust the A/F ratio to keep it optimal, in order to reduce emissions. The computer and all the OEM smog equipment must be in place and working to be smog legal here in Cali.

This is the Carter BBD with electronic feedback motor:

Smog laws may vary in CA depending on county, so you'll want to check to see what you are subject to. With that said, some people manage to find the right shop to take their non-legal 4.2L (nuttered and/or aftermarket carb) to and still pass smog.

Any engine mods must be CARB approved, or you risk being fined or just not being able to get smogged. Other than the OEM computer controlled Carter BBD, our only other smog legal options for fuel delivery for the 4.2L in CA are: Howell TBI kit, Mopar MPFI kit, or just an outright engine swap to a newer model fuel injected engine (such as the 4.0L found in newer Wranglers)

one other question.. do you know if I would get by smog test if I had a 4L head on my 4.2... I know this is another popular option for getting FI.

The YJ uses the electric feedback one. You "may" be able to get by with just the intake and FI swap but I don't think I'd spend the time and effort on a gamble.

The approved CA legal ways are the Mopar MPFI kit, the Howell TBI kit, and a full engine swap.

I did the Howell kit and am extremely happy with it.

Thanks all.. I just ordered a quick carter replacement... so that I can get things running right for SMOG.. I will have to check into the head swap with my county... and if that is not good.. finally go with 4L swap.. thanks again!

This entire area uses the same referee station, I'd start there on the head swap. You may be able to pass it off as an entire swap, depending on how wise the inspector is. Of course you could just try and bypass the ref all together and just go get it smogged, but again that's a gamble.
