Can't teach this dog old tricks.
I'm having trouble regaining the knowledge of driving a stick.
I guess I burnt out too many cells in my teen days. This old guy ain't cut out to even get down my driveway without stalling 20 times.(driveway is only 30 ft) but put me facing forward and I only stall about half that. What are my options on a swap to an Auto tranny? 1992 4.0L I think AX15 w/NP231. Can I just pick up a low cost XJ and swap out the AW4 & NP242? What else would I need? Or should I be looking at NV3550/4500, 350/400 Turbo? I need to keep costs low. The wife don't give much of a jeep budget. Currently the YJ is stock, will be a daily driver mostly city traffic.

I can relate to your problem, I had to learn how to drive a standard all over again as well. Instead of swapping in an auto try this. Put the jeep in four low and practice on a gravel road. You won't get up to any speed and you can do a lot of shifting in a short while. Took me about a day before I felt confident, but I found that I hardly ever stalled it doing it this way. I think you will find a swap quite expensive.

think of it like an old school scale its all about balancing the 2 pedals. try to be as smooth as possible at doing so. Good luck, you truly will appreciate it more, driving anyway.

whats up ... im 17 now and bought my jeep when i was 16.. first vehicle of mine and ill own her till i croke. i didnt have really any problems driving a standard... maybe because im used to riding motox, quads, tractors and ect. try starting on something small like a motocycle with a clutch seemed to help me... also i think jeeps ARENTt the easiest stick to drive, try driving a newer manual.. like a car or something

It took me 15 minutes to move a total of about 30 ft up my driveway. Giving myself whiplash in the process. Maybe with the warmer weather I'll boot up and down my street for a while til I get the hang of it. I tell ya though after 20+ years of driving an Auto, I think I'd still prefer it over stick. |
