Can 31x10.50's fit on 15x7 rims?

My '89 Islander should arrive Thursday and I know it's going to need tires. I have the stock steel rims that I think are 15x7. The guy at the tire store said 31x10.50 size tires need a 15x8 rim or the middle of the new tire will wear faster than the rest. Anyone have any comments or experience with this? Thanks.

Where can you get a set of cheap steel rims?

You can do it but the tire store is correct. The tire will balloon out and wear the center, you can play with the air pressure to compensate a bit at the cost of MPG.

i havent had a problem with mine and i have 32.5 x 11.5 on 7" rims.. at about 30 psi.. my tires are wearing evenly..

i didnt go with a 15x8 because i didnt want to have to buy new rims and fender flares (due to the backspacing.

I run 33x10.50's on my stock 7" steel wheels. Run them at 30 psi and have no problems. Got about 16k on them. This is on a TJ though.

15x7

Same here - have 31x10.50 mud tires on the factory 15x7 rims with no problems in that regard. Some rubbing, but no wear problems to speak of.

Thanks everyone. Glad to hear that my stock rims will work. More $$ to put towards a lift.

After you get them mounted just to the chalk test on 'em (where you put a thick line across the tread and roll 'em over asphalt a couple of times to see where you are riding on your tires) to find the right air pressure and you'll be fine.
