Buying a remmaned engine need your guys opinions
Okay so I'm in the process of finding a remmaned engine to buy. So far I have called autozone and looked on quadratec... I plan on doing a lot more searching but I'm starting off with this. Autozone has 3 different brands to choose from. They have Marshall which cost $1429.00, it has a 300$ core charge and comes with a 3 year warrenty. Next on the list is the Performance. It cost $1359.00, it has a 400$ core and also comes with a 3 year warrenty. However the performance engine does not include: oil pan, or any of the gaskets, and something else. I lost interest and didn't really pay attention to this engine. The third they offer is the Surefire. It cost $1549.99, has a 295 core charge, and carrys a 3 year warrenty. There shipping system seems okay. He informed me that I pay for the engine and the core after this they will ship the engine. Once they recieve the engine they will call me I will bring in my engine and they will give me the remmaned. At this point I will get my core charge back.
The other thing I have looked into is from Quadratec. Replacement Parts for Jeep® Vehicles - Quadratec So far the engine from quadratec seems like the way to go. it cost 1595.99 and seems to include everything I need. So I was hoping I could get some advise from those of you who have gone this route. I would love to know who you went through for the engine and any advise you have to offer. I was also wondering how straight forward these swaps are.. It seems as if its as easy as just unbolting and bolting back up and transfering stuff over.. Is this true or is there a lot more involved. Also from looking at the engine on quadratec it doesn't seem like I would need to order any other parts to make the swap work. Am I wrong or Right about this. Thanks in Advance guys I'm only 17 and still have a lot to learn. I am planning on doing all the work myself so I will be asking a lot of questions I'm sure. Thanks, Jonathan

I'd just get the Quadratec one. I might do that if I end up having to put a grand into my engine when I rebuild it.

Have you thought about droping your engine off at a local machine shop and have them remanufacture your engine?

No I havn't but I was considering just doing a rebuild on it myself but when looking at the cost it seemed almost as efficient to do the remmaned. Also with the remmaned I get the warrenty which is nice

Doing a rebuild yourself is super hard if you don't know what you're doing really.
I'm getting my friend that rebuilds engine to do it for cost of parts is all. |

Next fall I plan on going to school to start my career off in mechanics. Not sure exactly what im going be doing but I know it will involve working on cars in some form. I have always loved working on vehicles it has been a huge interest of mine, not just something I like to do as a hobby. |

Doing a rebuild the right way will cost as much as buying a rebuilt one from a supplier. There are people that just pull a engine down and hone it and install new rings and bearings in and call it rebuilt. Doing right means going to a machine shop to have block cleaned, checked for cracks honed if bore is still with in limits and having head redone. Crank trued. New cam bearings installed. This is going to be 600 to 800 dollars not counting the parts and time to put it back together.

When they say the engine does not come with the oil pan, valve covers, intake...etc..etc.. You take your old one off and put them on. You get new gaskets with the re-man engine. What does shipping cost from quadra?
also whats wrong with the current engine ? |

It's free shipping from Quadra. They send it to you, then put the old one into a crate after you call a number with all the info and ship it back free as well.
The new engines come with almost everything you need. Just do the swap from engine to engine of what you do then call them and they take it away. |

I bought a reman long block from a local engine shop here in Phoenix. They were called five star engine exchange. I just looked for engine shops in my area and went with the best price. It was around $1600 but with my core it was around $1100. It came with a one year warranty. I didn't have to wait for or pay for shipping but I did have to have a truck to haul everything in.
How it worked is I called them and asked if they carried 4.0L Jeep engines. They said they could have one ready in a few days. I stripped my engine in the mantime and then took the stripped longblock down with me. They then inspect it to ensure it is worth the core charge, ie rebuildable. They said yes so we load the new one up and I pay and go home and throw the new one in. It came with a full gasket set and new oil pump.

correct I was just typing what they told me and the fact it didn't come with the oil seals or gaskets made me lose interest. As for whats wrong the rings are shot as long with the valve seals and head gasket. Not all that bad.. but I plan on having the jeep for a long time and if I was going to tear the block apart to replace those I figured I mise as well go all the way and do it rite once.. and then once I started looking at what I was going to spend I figured it would be better to go with a remmaned.

Whatever you go with, don't take them your old engine until the new one is in and running. You never know what you may leave on the old one to only find out later you needed.

I got my engine from S&S High Performance Engines, comes with all new gaskets for everything. You put all your parts on the new engine, valve cover, oil pan etc. All parts they use are new except for the crank, they machine and balance the crank. 7 yr warranty,
$1300, $200 core. Read up on their rebuild process, very impressive. I checked a lot of other places, checkers etc...didn't like the rebuild company's process. Check it out.....1991-1995 Jeep Wrangler Engine - L6, 4.0 L, 242 CID; Our Remanufactured Engines Backed By 100,000 Mile / 7-Year Warranty! |
