Breather Filter?

On the rear of the valve cover on an 88 yj with the 2.5 there is a black plastic box that is attached to a hose that runs to the air box. What does this do? It seems to have some type of filter in it. The part is no longer available from the dealer and I can't get one aftermarket as far as I know. does anyone know what function this part serves? thanks

To filter the air coming out of the crank case vent...If you follow the line, it should connect to the air cleaner on the inner side of the filter. Therefore, that air needs to be filtered before it is sucked into the intake.

So I guess it would have nothing to do with separating oil out of the air coming into the air box. trying to troubleshoot a blow by problem. Thank you for the info

Do you still have the stock air cleaner setup?

It should have a little cup there that will catch oil that heads towards the intake. Does it have oil in it?

Then you have very bad blowby most likely. Have you replaced the PCV valve of late? It may be clogged.

replaced the pcv and cleaned the hoses, also installed new air filter. two days later the box was soaked again. I did a compression test and found one cylinder to be 10 psi lower than the others. Im afraid I may have a cracked ring.

do a leakdown test....

google will describe how to do it and what it will tell you.

10 psi difference in 1 cylinder on a compression check isn't the end of the world. the leakdown test will tell you more.
