Brake lights only work when engine not running?

When I am not cranked, the brake lights work correctly. When I crank the jeep and hit the brake pedal, only the reverse lights come on. The park lights work ok. Any ideas?

I had a friend who had an engine swap done on his jeep and after that he had some funky electrical problems. Turns out the jack *** who did the engine swap never grounded the battery to the frame, only to the engine block. I put a ground from the battery to frame and he never had a problem again. Check for proper ground both from battery to engine block and battery to frame. Either can cause some wacky problems like your having.

Thanks Jeep95xj. I put some rear brake light brush guards on at Christmas. Did not notice the lights at the time. Maybe something happened with the grounding at that time.

Anything is possible. SOmetimes the bolts that hold the lights to the body also hold a ground wire. If you un bolted them to put the brush guards on you may have missed the ground wire when you put them back together. Check your battery grounds also
